Again with a blackstone this is super easy to prepare and get ready for the kids before they wake up. To make french toast, start by whisking together the eggs, milk, and cinnamon in a bowl. Prince Gallitzen State Park: This state park is located in central Pennsylvania and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The campground has tons of amenities, including a playground, pavilion, and swimming beach. There are also plenty of hiking trails nearby if you want to explore the area. They have really nice wooded campsites with of space. They have recently added several full hook up sites to several of the loops which makes it great for the RV'ers with big rigs. We have been coming here for years started out tent camping and love the hiking and biking trails. There is a nice campground store for anything you may need and water access makes it easy to bring a Kayak or Paddle Board for water adventures. There is a great little bike track for kids called humps and bumps. It will entertain your kids for hours just riding in a circle. This is a great spot for families or groups. The campground has over 100 sites to choose from, and many of them are secluded and private. There are also plenty of hiking, biking, kayaking, and floats on the river. This is an amazing place to visit. It has everything a outdoorsman would want. First thought on driving into Cook Forest is how did they get all these amenities in the middle of nowhere. There are ice cream parlors, souvenirs, go carts, canoeing, and putt putt courses galore. The nice thing about it though is that the state park is secluded and has big wooded sites. So, if all the fun things to do is not your cup of tea just sit back and relax in this beautiful state park. We spent a day kayaking the river and the next day we floated the same river. There are several outfitters with everything you need to have a great day on the river. Seven Points Campground Lake Raystown: This campground is located on the east side of Pennsylvania and offers a beautiful view of Lake Raystown. The campground has over 200 sites to choose from, and many of them are right on the water. There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing and my favorite thing to do Mt Biking. Raystown lake is also a really nice boating lake. The lake is a natural beauty with so many coves and inlets for the biggest of boats to enjoy. They do have a camping resort on the other side of the lake which makes it nice for anyone looking for rustic cabins or cabin rentals. There are 50 miles of single track mountain biking at this campground. They are some of the best flow trails on the East coast and are the # 1 trail system in Pennsylvania. This is still the best mountain biking trails I have found. I have been to Pisgah, the Smokies, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Stowe VT, Boston area, and Virginia riding and these are still my favorite. This is a family friendly campground and has so much to offer. There have volleyball nets, playgrounds, kayak and paddleboard rentals. The kids took a kayak over to an island and spent the afternoon cliff jumping with a 10 ft and 25 ft cliff to launch off of. The sites here are some of the nicest we have ever seen. They are all big and private with stunning views of Raystown Lake. There are steps down from your camper to a pad with a fire pit and area for a tent. You are literally 10 feet away from the water as you enjoy a sunset while sitting around the fire. The lake is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or just relax and enjoy the view. Pymatuning State Park This state park is located in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania and offers a beautiful view of Pymatuning Lake. The campground has over 200 sites to choose from, and many of them are right on the water. There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy, including swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking. We spent a day on the lake and the boat rentals were ridiculously cheap. We have rented a pontoon boat before, but this was only $100 for the day. Yes for the day it was a really nice surprise. We had a blast motoring around this huge lake which shares some of its borders with Ohio. There is a spot to feed the carp which is what this place is known for. Its kinda gross, but the kids love feeding those huge carp. This is a great spot for anyones outdoor adventure. There are several golf courses close and another lake with jet ski rentals that can make for an epic weekend trip. Camping in Pennsylvania can be some of the best in the camping in the nation. Oh, and a sweet little bakery close called Twin Pies. All pies are top notch. Ricketts Glenn If you like waterfalls this is a must visit campground for you. Ricketts Glenn offers 22 named waterfalls, the tallest being Kitchen Falls at 94 feet. The falls are all located within Ricketts Glen State Park and you can hike to them all via the Falls Trail which is a beautiful and relatively easy hike. The best time to visit the falls is after a rain when they are really flowing, but they are still beautiful anytime of the year. The Ricketts Glen state park campground is a primitive campground. There are no electric hookups and I would be remiss to mention there is one of the greatest meals I have ever had in my life close to this campground. Old Tioga Farms is a must do in this area. Its a bit pricey, but exquisite fine cuisine. Ohiopyle state park campground Ohiopyle is located in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania and is one of the most popular camping destinations in the state. Ohiopyle offers something for everyone, with beautiful scenery, hiking trails, waterfalls, and whitewater rafting. This state park campground has a little bit of everything and is hiking distance away from the river and downtown area. We love camping here with so many options for our daytime adventures. Tent camping sites are perfect due to the abundant forest around each site. My son and I thought it might be fun to try kayaking on stage 3 rapids without any guide or lessons. I mean really how hard can it be its just some rapids. Well let me tell you it was way more intense than I thought it would be. We both bailed out after the 3rd rapid and had to walk our kayaks back up to where we started. I should have at least watched a youtube video before we went. Along with the kayaking an easier and more family friendly activity would be whitewater rafting. There are also natural waterslides and great hiking trails. The downtown area is perfect for food, souvenirs, or grabbing a beer at one of the many bars. The "Bike the Great Allegheny Passage" runs right through this town. So if kayaking down stage 5 rapids aren't your thing this has over 100 miles of rails to trails style biking along the river. The lake is stocked with trout and there are also streams nearby that are great spots for fly fishing for the avid fisherman. Camping in pennsylvania allows you to have some of the best fishing streams in the nation. I was recently talking to someone from out of state who travels into Pennsylvania to go fishing 20 minutes from where I live. So be thankful on how great our outdoor lovely park systems are. The RV sites that are right on the river are perfect for the fisherman in the family. Also while visiting Little Pine state park there is a really nice biking trail system that runs along the Little Pine river which is great to get in some miles. In the winter there are some really nice cross country skiing to do at this area. There are endless hiking trails that will keep even the most in shape person breathing heavy by the end of the day. This is a nature lover's paradise with so much to do this is a must visit spot. 8. French Creek State Park 's A park that has yet to lose its soul. This state park campground is one of the best on the Eastern side of PA. We were able to spend a wonderful day in this stunning natural reserve. Excellent parking lot, clean restrooms, and plenty of picnic tables and activity areas around. There are 226 sites to pick from so there is a site suited for everyone. French creek state park camping areas are well kept and peaceful. Hiking down to one of the lakes and fishing was especially fun when we caught a brown trout! The whole place is themed like Yogi Bear and the kids will have a blast. They offer activities like hayrides, fishing, swimming, and crafts. If you have kids and love to camp and have not tried a Yogi Bear campground this is a must do!!!! The sites here are really close together and there isn't much privacy. This didn't bother us too much because there is so much to do. From relaxing by the swimming pool to flying down the water slides this place is fun. This campground has an amazing waterpark which pays for itself. You do need to watch when you go to make sure it will be open, but in the middle of summer with all the heat this is a great weekend getaway. Yes the sites cost alot more than a state park rate, but it is well worth it. They have mini golf included, movies, games, bounce pillows, go carts, and so much more. My kids can play 10 rounds of mini golf in a weekend and love it. The camping cottages are roomy and nice and has a bit of a camping resort feel to them. There are rustic cabins for rent and a really nice game room on site for the kids as well. The cabin rentals can be on the pricey side, but you need to look at everything you get with this campground. Trust me your kids will thank you and love every minute of this place. There are some really nice sites right on the water and some tent sites even closer to the water. What we loved about this campground is that you can tube or kayak as many miles as you want and end up right back at your campground. Take a truck with some kids drop them off 2-3 miles up stream and they end up back at your site in a few hours depending on the speed of the river. They also offer a shuttle service that will take you up to a bunch of tubes all ready for a float which was a nice option also. This is perfect for the entire family to have a great time at a camping resort. They have a on site winery with ready made wine slushies which was the perfect afternoon cocktail in the heat. Buttonwood as all the modern amenities for a great campground. RV campsites are all well maintained and the camp store is full of great camping gear and things you may have forgotten. Miniature golf is free and included with your stay and the kids loved the laser tag also. A sunshade is a great investment and can really make or break a camping trip, especially if you camp in an area without natural shade. Your baby can nap in the open air, and you can even set it up over a great patch of sand for digging! I was terrified to go on a family camping trip while potty training my toddler, but it turns out that it wasn't as bad as I thought. Thanks to our portable potty, the trip was saved and my toddler did great! If your children are older, bring bikes, games (especially handy if it’s pouring rain), and sand toys if you’re by a lake or water. Headlamps, binoculars, slacklines, kites and hammocks can add a lot of fun. Glow sticks are great for older kids at nighttime and they also help you to keep track of where they’re at. #9. Relax After you arrive at the campsite and set up, use that opportunity to recharge by watching your children explore or enjoy nature yourself with walks, hikes, canoeing or biking trips. You can also relax in the tent reading a book if that's more your speed. And remember - you deserve this experience! When you're accustomed to the complex process required for tent camping, including mats and multiple pieces that need to be put together, a hammock feels like a breath of fresh air! All you really require is one piece of fabric, some rope and maybe a sleeping bag if it's cold out - that's it! 2. You can make an adventure out of anything When the virus struck, we had already completed 1,000 miles of our round-the-world cycling expedition. Even though we were forced to put a pause on our adventure, setting up camp in a hammock at home makes for an enjoyable experience. When darkness creeps in and you close your eyes under the stars, it's almost as if you're back in nature with all its elements engulfing your skin - no imagination needed! On top of that, if the forecast predicts rain, you can always pitch your tent with a tarp (or make one out of some ponchos and tarps). That way it truly feels like you're on an outdoor escapade. 3. Don’t try peeing off the hammock!!! Don't underestimate the difficulty of this job - I certainly did. Trust me, it's not as straightforward and simple as you might think. Save yourself from making my same mistake! I know its sounds like a great idea, but it is not so don't try it especially if someone is sleeping below you. Thankfully, the bathroom break was not recorded on camera - we just wanted to get ready for bed! 4. Those birds are loud! Every morning, we are typically woken around 6-7 am by the melodious birds chirping away in our hammocks. Unlike sleeping in a tent where you can somewhat mute the sounds outside, with a sleeping hammock all the noises feel closer to us - like an alarm clock I'll never switch off! We've noticed that although there were plenty of birds frequenting our garden before this pandemic began, it appears their presence has increased exponentially now that human activity is more limited and nature is flourishing as a result. Anyone else think this is one of best ways to start your day? The sweet sounds of birds fill the air, undisturbed by the hum of engines or aircrafts; muntjacs stopped by our house for a visit - something never seen before in this area! There have been more squirrels, butterflies and raptors than we ever had before. We even made some friends with rodents due to our green bins not being collected for two months- but that's another story entirely! Let's capitalize on this incredible occurrence and keep the positive momentum going! Despite the current pandemic, nature has had a chance to regenerate in just a few months--can we continue allowing it to thrive after lockdown is over? I'm confident that if we maintain our commitment, remarkable conservation of natural resources will be achievable. Warning: if you’re pitched under two trees very popular with the local bird community, pitch a tarp and expect it to be pretty messy in the morning. Better the tarp than your face though! 5. Why have we been tent camping so long? We've owned these hammocks for years now (handcrafted from a charming Indonesian shop), yet we have always opted to take the tent along on hiking trips, cycling tours, and climbing adventures – why? The answer is simple: after all these years of research and development, the hammock has been perfected into an unforgettable outdoor experience. It's lighter than ever before with quick set-up time; you'll be sleeping in no time! A built-in mosquito net keeps pesky bugs away while providing ample breathability — so why bother carrying around cumbersome tent poles and pegs if you don't need them? Not to mention, they are as lightweight as a bivvy and the perfect setup for an adventurous escapade. We can’t wait to plan some hammock-based hikes so that we can see how it holds up with extended hikes. Very grateful for the mosquito net! 6. The tighter the better If you're looking for a good night's rest, hanging your hammock tightly is the way to go—it'll give you all the depth of sleep that you need! Hang it up properly and even sleeping on your side will be just as comfortable. This might not apply when lounging around in leisure but getting plenty of shut-eye should always come first.
7. The big sleeping bag question! After multiple attempts, I finally figured out the best way to get into my sleeping bag in a hammock: should you A) enter your sleeping bag and then slip into the hammock or B) clamber inside the hammock and shimmy yourself into your snug little cocoon? At first, option A seemed like it would work well with a firmly pitched hammock. However, without fail each time ended up nearly flipping me onto one side! At this point, I decided that attempt number two at option B was worth trying by wriggling myself directly INTO THE SLEEPING BAG while still nestled within the comfy confines of my beloved hanging oasis- luckily with much success!! I unzipped the sleeping bag, spread it out on the hammock and snuggled inside. This method of zipping up easily with grace was undoubtedly the best option - we'll dub this choice 'Option C'! We wholeheartedly advise that you follow our lead to get a sound night's rest. 8. Sleeping in a hammock is probably the best way to feel connected with your surroundings When you're camping in a tent, your world is practically encapsulated. Even with bivvy bag camping, this remains true - but when it comes to sleeping in a campervan, can we really call that 'camping'? For the ultimate closeness and connection with nature however, nothing quite beats hammock camping. You'll be able to feel nature's raw elements without obstruction; gaze up into the sky (or beneath a tarp); listen intently as wildlife chirps from above; and if Mother Nature grants permission on an evening where winds are strong enough...you may even have her rocking you to sleep! Contrastingly though-in comparison-sleeping in tents during windy weather won't provide such an inviting experience.
9. Keep everything close to hand As you begin to feel comfortable and snuggled up in your hammock, you suddenly remember that the water bottle, headlamp or book - all essentials for a good night's rest - are still a few meters away. Sure, it may not seem like much of an issue but if you've already cocooned yourself into your sleeping bag then it can be quite annoying having to get back out again! This brings us on nicely to our next point...
10. Is sleeping in a hammock the most practical? Although hammocks boast characteristics of size, weight, and easy assembly that are highly beneficial for camping trips, there are a couple drawbacks to be aware of. To begin with, you need trees to support the hammock which can be hard to come by in some terrains. Additionally, storing your gear is not always possible because it's too cramped or uncomfortable within the confines of the hammock itself; this is especially true when tackling extended hikes or cycle tours with increased amounts of supplies and equipment. While I'm comfortable to leave my bags against the tree in my garden, this is not an ideal situation when travelling. Additionally, it's just not warm enough for cold nights - even with a good-quality sleeping bag providing insulation up to -17°C. During a night spent at -2°C (despite wearing thermals and proper clothing), the uncomfortable chill forced me into an unbearable, restless sleep. It was simply awful! Absolutely! You can get your hands on a luxurious hammock underquilt for ultimate comfort. 11. The double hammock! Testing the double hammock has been on our bucket list for a while now. If you're not familiar with what I'm referring to, it's basically setting up two individual hammocks that are attached together by two trees (like bunk beds). Much to my surprise, Sarah wasn't so sure about this venture; however, we pulled it off flawlessly! Just make sure when securing the top one that you do an adequate job so its occupant doesn't tumble down on their partner in crime during the night. Refer to the photo below as a reference point if needed! Other tips to keep in mind: let the person who typically wakes up earlier sleep on the bottom bunk, and try not to eat too many beans for dinner – there's limited space! 13. Is there a better place to read a book? Imagining being engulfed in a tranquil comfort of a hammock bed, with the added bonus of curling up to an engrossing outdoor book - is there anything more fulfilling? I believe not! The Best Hammock for reading: Hammock 14. The outdoors is worth protecting What's more, these hammock camps serve as a timely reminder of how essential our environment is to us. It's time that we rediscovered the connection between us and the outdoors! Each morning, when you awaken beneath two towering trees with wildlife all around you...it truly brings home the luckiness of having such access to mother nature. We must ensure she continues being protected for generations to come. I'm looking forward to planning a thrilling excursion where I can have the same early morning serenity but surrounded by lush woodlands in a breathtaking national park or embarking on an incredible cycling journey.
